Students from Hancock Elementary in the San Diego neighborhood of Tierrasanta, participated in the Project Cornerstone concrete making activity on October 17th & 23th, 2014.
Crystal Howard, Alyssa Burley and volunteer Barbara, led Ms. Craig, Ms. Doran, Ms. Gapasin, Ms. Gonzalez and Ms. Hess’ second grade classes in a presentation designed to educate students about construction aggregates. They learned where construction aggregates are found locally and how they are used throughout our communities to build roads, schools and homes. After the lesson, students went outside to make concrete pavers using the information they learned inside the classroom.

After seeing the program, the school’s principal, Jodi Buckson, invited Project Cornerstone to collaborate on future projects at the school.
Over the two days at the school, about 145 2nd grade students successfully completed the lecture and concrete project. They all came away from the lesson with a greater appreciation of local mineral resources, specifically construction aggregates, and an understanding of their importance in each of their daily lives.
