As the El Niño storms hit the California coast, many residents rush to gather sandbags to divert the rising waters away from their property. These storms are a good reminder of how important construction aggregates (i.e., sand , gravel and crushed stone) are to our communities’ infrastructure and safety.
Construction aggregates are most commonly used to make concrete and asphalt products. However, in times of extreme flooding, bags filled with sand are used to temporarily divert water away from structures.
In San Diego, Councilmember Scott Sherman‘s office teamed up with Superior Ready Mix and Urban Corps. to provide free sand and sand bags to local residents. The sandbag pickup event was held at Qualcomm Stadium on Thursday, January 7, 2016.
Superior Ready Mix has a rock quarry located about 3 miles from the stadium. The company mines rock and produces asphalt at the site.
