The San Diego Association of Governments‘ (SANDAG) September newsletter was released September 30, 2014.
In the latest issue, an article about transportation bonds pictured a Hanson Aggregates truck to illustrate the transportation improvements made by the sale of $350 million in tax-exempt, fixed-rate bonds.
The local San Diego construction aggregates industry plays a vital role in maintaining our transportation infrastructure.
Construction aggregates are sand, gravel and crushed stone used to make common building materials like concrete and asphalt, among many other applications.
While local supplies of construction aggregates are key to keeping transportation project costs low, the County is facing a shortage. This means the cost to ship the needed materials to San Diego will raise the cost of every project.
San Diego County has plenty of material to satisfy demand, though. Production is slowed by the lack of new mine site permits.
Permitting of new construction aggregate sites is essential to maintain local transportation infrastructure at a reasonable cost to tax payers.
